About Brown Skin Women

Bringing Women Together Since 2013

Brown Skin Women is a community dedicated to bringing women together through social gatherings, shared experiences, and meaningful connections.

Our story began in 2013 as a natural hair blog. That fall, our founder wanted to connect in person with the very women who were liking, commenting on, and sharing her content online. What began as a simple desire for connection became our first natural hair meetup.

From there, the community grew. Meetups became brunches, expos, and other experiences that brought women together, while our digital community expanded to explore natural beauty, education, and wellness.

Over the years, our work in natural hair care grew into a dedicated hair studio, educational resources, and professional training.

Following the pandemic, we attempted to bring our social gatherings back, but the timing wasn't right. As we focused on developing our hair care services and education, we made the difficult decision to pause events.

Today, those services and resources have a dedicated home under Sani Auri, creating an opportunity for Brown Skin Women to return to where it all began.

Why We Gather

We believe meaningful social connection deserves a place in our lives, not just when everything else is done, but as part of living well.

Through BSW Socials, we're creating opportunities for women to meet new people, build friendships, enjoy shared experiences, and simply have a good time.

We're beginning in Hartford, Connecticut, with plans to bring our gatherings to more cities in 2027.

Whether you're joining us for the first time or reconnecting with a community you've known for years, we're glad you're here.

Meet Our Founder

Carmen Veal Conway founded Brown Skin Women in 2013, beginning with a natural hair blog that grew into an international education community, hair studio, and series of in-person experiences.

Her work has included educating consumers, caregivers, and beauty professionals, as well as advising cultural institutions on natural hair care.

She is also the author of the forthcoming The Truth About Natural Hair (Agate/Bolden, Fall 2027).

Today, Carmen continues her work in natural hair care through Sani Auri while bringing Brown Skin Women back to its original focus: creating opportunities for women to connect beyond the screen.
