At Brown Skin Women, we want to encourage women to make friendship, connection, and enjoyment part of everyday life.
BSW began through digital connections, but it grew when we brought those interactions into real life. What emerged was a community of women who also wanted to make room for relationships beyond the screen, especially outside the familiar spaces of home and work.
Over the years, we’ve witnessed what can happen when women make room for these experiences. Friendships begin, relationships grow, and sometimes, people who were once strangers become an important part of each other’s lives.
Here are three reasons we believe making room for real-life connection is worth it.
1. Friendship Requires Opportunity
Relationships need opportunities to begin. Getting outside our familiar environments allows us to meet people we might never encounter otherwise.
Have you ever watched a small child at a playground?
It’s kind of wild how quickly and easily children make friends with other kids. One minute, they’re complete strangers. Twenty minutes later, they’re best friends, excited about the possibility of seeing each other again.
Somewhere along the way, making friends as adults can start to feel a little more complicated.
We have our routines, responsibilities, and familiar environments. And while there’s comfort in those things, they don’t always create opportunities to meet new people.
That’s part of why BSW Socials exists.
We want to create opportunities for friendships to begin.
You might arrive feeling optimistic and maybe a little nervous. But imagine leaving with a sense of pride because you made the choice to show up. A few new contacts saved in your phone, conversations you enjoyed, and connections with women you might never have encountered otherwise.
Sometimes, the beginning of a meaningful friendship is simply deciding to put yourself in a room where one is possible.
2. Life Is Better When We Have People to Share It With
The family we get to choose.
I’ve always loved that description of friendship.
As we grow through life, there are moments when we recognize how much more meaningful certain experiences could be if we had people to share them with.
And I’m not just talking about having someone to go places with.
I’m talking about the friends you call when life is going well and when it isn’t. The people who celebrate your accomplishments, encourage you through challenges, and support you as you navigate different seasons of life.
Friends who become supporters of your life.
One of the beautiful things about friendship is that we get to cultivate what those relationships look like. They can grow and evolve as we do.
Some friendships become deeply rooted in our lives. Others bring something meaningful to a particular season. And sometimes, the people we meet unexpectedly become the very people we couldn’t imagine doing life without.
That’s the beauty of having the opportunity to choose and nurture these relationships.
What’s life if we don’t get to share it with others?
3. Joy Deserves a Place in Everyday Life
Not every outing needs a special occasion.
We can make room for fun, laughter, new experiences, and simple moments of enjoyment without waiting until everything else is done.
Life has its twists and turns, and if we’re not mindful, we can easily forget that there’s joy to be found along the way.
Sometimes, the most enjoyable moments are the ones we get to share with others.
That’s another reason we’re bringing BSW Socials back.
We want women to have experiences that leave them feeling full.
The kind of evening where you’ve smiled so much your cheeks hurt. Where a conversation leaves you feeling inspired or motivated. Where you leave already looking forward to meeting up with someone you just met.
It doesn’t have to be complicated or extravagant to be meaningful.
Sometimes, it’s simply an evening spent in good company, enjoying yourself and remembering how good it feels to connect.
Making Room for More
Friendship, connection, and joy aren’t things we have to reserve for a particular season of life.
We can make room for them right where we are.
That’s what we’re hoping to encourage through BSW Socials. More opportunities to meet people, cultivate friendships, enjoy shared experiences, and make meaningful connections along the way.
Whether you’re reconnecting with our community or joining us for the first time, we’d love to see you at an upcoming gathering.
