There are many belief systems that recognize spring as a more accurate new year. It may not line up with our calendar New Year, but spring represents rebirth and change. As we emerge into a new cycle of life, we urge you to consider the perfect opportunity to refresh your natural hair and your mind. The winter months are now behind us. It’s time to shed the old and welcome the new!

Here are a few things you can do to get started.

Refresh Your Hair

  1. Get a trim. What’s a better way to start the new season than getting rid of what doesn’t serve you? A trim will help you get rid of any split ends or damage that your hair sustained over the winter months. Give your natural hair a healthy start with a professional trim. As a rule of thumb, always get your hair cut in the state you wear it. If you rock your natural curls or a silk press, that’s how your stylist should trim it.

  2. Reset your hair. Many naturals struggle with build-up. This can come from poor-quality products, the use of raw oils and butters, or even the water in their home. Build-up can happen for different reasons but the solution is the same: remove it. Use a high-quality clarifying shampoo to help reset your hair. If you have hard water, you may need to use another cleanser.

  3. Try a new hairstyle. Shake things up by trying out a new hairstyle. Whether that’s exploring wash-n-gos or getting a curly cut, we think you should get out of your comfort zone. Have some fun and try a fresh new look, you may find your new favorite hairstyle!

Refresh Your Mind

  1. Take a break. As Black women, we tend to put more pressure on ourselves to succeed at everything we do. It’s harder for us to carve time out for ourselves. We need to remember to treat ourselves kindly, and that includes resting. Give yourself a break from the daily hustle and grind. Take a walk, read a book, or try meditation. Even just a few minutes of relaxation can vastly improve your mental health.

  2. Spring clean. Out with the old, in with the new. This tip is similar to trimming your natural hair. Spring cleaning is popular for a reason. This is the perfect time of year to clean your home and declutter your space. Decluttering and cleaning your space can improve your mental health. A clean environment can help you clear your mind and give you a fresh start.

  3. Set new goals. Spring is a great time to set new goals and aspirations for the rest of the year. Write down your goals and break them into smaller steps that you can actively work toward. This way, you’re more likely to stay committed to them and not get overwhelmed. Remember to be realistic when setting your goals. Consider the amount of time you can spend working toward accomplishing them and how you can work them into your everyday life. Don’t beat yourself up if you stumble along the way, it’s great that you’re actively working towards something great.
