A new restaurant, offering African- Caribbean-American Cuisine on Capital Avenue in Hartford, CT is officially open for business. The pork-free establishment is healthy in manner and offers vegetarian and vegan alternatives. The story behind the beautiful Women Chefs and Owners, Edna and deLinda, is a remarkable tale on how different paths and passions can meet at the same destination. I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Edna and deLinda a day before Stella’s Eatery and Mazie’s Catering opened and am thrilled to tell their story.
Edna and deLinda are both natives of Hartford, growing up within a mile of each other, but didn’t formally meet until later in life.
Chef Stella’s (deLinda) Story:
While working at the state of Connecticut, deLinda had a burning to desire to resign from her full time job. She couldn’t quite understand why the desire was so strong, but she chose to follow her heart. Tapping into her love for cooking since the young age of fourteen combined with a desire to someday own her own establishment, she decided to enroll in the Lincoln Culinary School in Hartford. Due to her stellar academic achievements, deLinda was invited to complete her externship at the Italian Culinary Institute in Italy.
Chef Edna’s Story
Edna completed her first 23 month culinary program in 2012 also at the Lincoln Culinary School in Hartford. This program led her to complete her externship at Walt Disney World in Florida. She originally planned to stay in Florida but her intuition suggested otherwise. Edna decided to return home post completion of the externship. Thankfully, as it allowed her to complete a second program years later, also at the Lincoln Culinary School. This opportunity also led her to the complete her externship at the Italian Culinary Institute in Italy.
How deLinda and Edna met
It was during their studies in Italy that allowed the two to connect. Enda recalled walking into the culinary classroom in Italy for the first time. “I was so excited to see deLinda, another woman of color that was in the same age range” share Edna. Edna and deLinda lived together in Italy with a third roommate, who eventually moved out, allowing deLinda’s beautiful daughters to move in. Edna recalled “while we were in Italy, she (deLinda) told me I could stop by her Hartford home anytime I was in the area”.
It wasn’t long before that visit happened.
Fast Forward to An Opportunity of A Lifetime
Edna and deLinda were given the opportunity to become the professional Chefs at an already established restaurant in Hartford. It wasn’t long before fate provided them the opportunity to re-establish the location and make it a place of their own. And in April 2016, Stella’s Eatery and Mazie’s Catering was born!
It is with great pleasure I share the soft launch of this culinary magic will take place 11AM-3PM Wenesday April 13, 2016 through Friday April 15, 2016. They will resume with normal business hours from 11AM-3PM Monday-Friday starting the week of Monday, April 18, 2016.
